GeoGuessr tips: how to tell where you are

The best GeoGuessr tips all come down to reading small clues fast: which side cars drive on, the colour of the road lines, the shape of bollards and number plates, the language on signs, and the plants and soil. Here are the clues that narrow down a country in seconds.

1. Driving side

About a third of the world drives on the left: the UK, Ireland, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Indonesia, Thailand and most of southern and eastern Africa. Look at parked cars and which side of the road the camera car is on.

2. Road lines

3. Number plates

Long white EU plates with a blue strip mean Europe. Yellow rear plates point to the UK or the Netherlands. Short, square plates suggest the Americas or Asia.

4. Language and alphabet

Cyrillic narrows it to Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Serbia and a few others. Accents help too: ł for Poland, ő for Hungary, ø for Denmark and Norway, ñ for Spanish-speaking countries.

5. Bollards, poles and signs

Every country has its own roadside bollards, utility poles and sign styles. Learning a handful of the most common ones is the fastest way to improve.

6. Plants, soil and sun

Red soil hints at Brazil, Australia or parts of Africa. Palm trees and dry hills point to warmer latitudes. In the southern hemisphere the sun sits to the north.
